The spatial structure of epidemic emergence: geographical aspects of poliomyelitis in north-eastern USA, July-October 1916

Summary.  The great epidemic of poliomyelitis which swept New York City and surrounding territory in the summer of 1916 eclipsed all previous global experience of the disease. We draw on epidemiological information that is included in the seminal US Public Health Bulletin 91, 'Epidemiologic studies of poliomyelitis in New York City and the northeastern United States during the year 1916' (Washington DC, 1918), to re-examine the spatial structure of the epidemic. For the main phase of transmission of the epidemic, July–October 1916, it is shown that the maximum concentration of activity of poliomyelitis occurred within a 128-km radius of New York City. Although the integrity of the poliomyelitis cluster was maintained up to approximately 500 km from the metropolitan focus, the level and rate of propagation of disease declined with distance from the origin of the epidemic. Finally, it is shown that the geographical transmission of the epidemic in north-eastern USA probably followed a process of mixed contagious–hierarchical diffusion.

近年来,乌鲁木齐市委市府高度重视基层社区应急管理工作,有效地提升了政府的公共危机管理能力。但许多薄弱环节的存在事实上影响了首府的长治久安。今后应着重从强化基层社区的公共危机预警预控能力建设、提高市民公共危机意识、建立高效应急救援队伍、加强沟通满足市民知情权等反面,加大工作力度。     

Extended structures of mediation: Re-examining brokerage in dynamic networks

In this paper we revisit the concept of brokerage in social networks. We elaborate on the concept of brokerage as a process, identifying three distinct classes of brokerage behavior. Based on this process model, we develop a framework for measuring brokerage opportunities in dynamic relational data. Using data on emergent inter-organizational collaborations, we employ the dynamic brokerage framework to examine the relationship between organizational attributes and coordination in the evolving network. Comparing the findings of our process-based definition with traditional, static approaches, we identify important dimensions of organizational action that would be missed by the latter approach.     

Emerging credits

Fifty years ago Edwin Hollander argued that to emerge as a credible leader, a group member must first develop credits with potential followers before followers can be led in a new direction. His idiosyncrasy credit theory of leadership emerged in the 1950s, gathered support in the 1960s, was questioned in the 1970s, stagnated since the 1980s and has now become a passing reference. We reexamine the theory and argue that it should be revived to span a gap in current thinking about leadership. We identify its key constructs, examine the mixed support, describe a revised model, suggest some testable research propositions and illustrate its application to the life of one prominent transformational leader.     

Effects of a summer emergent literacy intervention for rising kindergarteners

This study examined the effectiveness of a nine-week summer emergent literacy program implemented in a Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) summer program that serves families from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Participants were four- and five-year-old children attending a YMCA summer camp. After being placed in appropriate respective skill-level groups, children received one-hour, daily emergent literacy instruction from their camp counselors, who were trained as novice reading teachers. The teachers used emergent literacy activities to support letter-naming fluency and growth in letter-sound correspondence recognition in addition to mastery of read-aloud texts. The 28 participants experienced positive growth on both dependent measures (letter-naming fluency and letter-sound fluency), indicating the efficiency of the intervention as a tool for improving school readiness for children from low-income families. Additionally, the results suggest that beginning reading teachers may be able to conduct effective emergent literacy instruction, making the intervention replicable. Limitations and associated future research directions are discussed.

建立我国农村群体性突发事件预防体系的行政反思

本文从行政角度反思了我国农村群体性突发事件的主因和建立预防农村群体性突发事件体系的现实基础,认为应当建立以完善宣传教育制度,落实民主科学决策,畅通沟通渠道,加大监督、考核和奖惩制度的执行力这四项内容为主体的农村群体性突发事件预防体系,极力减少我国农村群体性突发事件的发生,为新农村建设营造一个和谐稳定的发展环境。
