Microcomputers in Political Campaigns - Lessons from the Jackson Campaign in New York

Summary

Microcomputer information systems arc a popular and effective tool in political elections. The problems posed by elections to designers and developers are unique, due to their short duration and crisis-oriented atmosphere. Formal systems methodologies become more rather than less intense in such an environment. The Jesse Jackson campaign in the 1988 New York State Presidential primary is examined for lessons in systems design methodology. Voter targeting is identified as a key automation area, and particular targeting techniques are discussed.     

Perceived lack of control over life events: Antecedents and consequences in a discharged patient sample

This paper examines perceptions of control over the occurrence of life events among a group of psychiatric patients interviewed at two points in time. First, perceived lack of control is treated as an independent variable affecting psychiatric symptomatology. Results show that, controlling for baseline symptomatology, perceived lack of control is significantly associated with demoralization but random with respect to delusions-hallucinations. Second, when perceived control is treated as a dependent variable results show that variation in how life events are perceived is more a function of the events that occur than of the personal dispositions of individuals. These results are compared with recently reported data from the general population.

信念”（doxa）是布迪厄社会学理论工具之一,源自行动者对客观世界的误识（misrecognition）,是正统与异端的切分。将布迪厄的“信念”引入翻译研究,可与场域、资本、惯习共同探究译本背后的社会因素;并以此为基础,研究《水浒传》杰克逊译本1963版和2010版背后的社会文化因素。研究发现,翻译场域中的信念,在资本上表现为译者进入目标场域实践的资格,在惯习上表现为译者种族中心主义或尊重多元文化的翻译倾向,在场域上表现为译者对行动者间利害关系的识别;杰克逊受其信念影响,表现出种族中心主义的翻译倾向,打造出通顺晓畅的1963版译本;2010版译本由爱德文·劳作为编辑,更新人名、称谓与度量衡的翻译,并借用沙博里译本的译名作为副标题;最终译本的背后是多个行动者所持信念的斗争与妥协。     

The North Carolina Online Sex Offender Registry: Awareness and Utilization by Childcare Providers

This study examined childcare providers' usage of the North Carolina Sex Offender and Public Protection Registry. One hundred twenty three childcare providers in 76 counties in North Carolina were surveyed via telephone interview about their utilization of the registry Web site. Responses revealed that most providers knew about the registry (87.9%). However, over half of these providers (53.2%) did not access the Web site for work purposes. In addition, very few centers (3.2%) had a policy mandating that employees check the Web site. Based on the results of this study, the majority of childcare centers are not effectively utilizing the registry.
