The generalized odd half-Cauchy family of distributions: Properties and applications

We introduce and study general mathematical properties of a new generator of continuous distributions with one extra parameter called the generalized odd half-Cauchy family. We present some special models and investigate the asymptotics and shapes. The new density function can be expressed as a linear mixture of exponentiated densities based on the same baseline distribution. We derive a power series for the quantile function. We discuss the estimation of the model parameters by maximum likelihood and prove empirically the flexibility of the new family by means of two real data sets.

究竟应当如何判断一种文化的先进与否,这个问题既是文化研究和文化哲学研究的难题,也显然由于其答案对现实的规范引导性而具有非常重要的现实意义。以往人们无法对文化的先进性进行确切的判断,主要是由其引用的传统文化定义和其中所隐含的基本立场和方法论视角决定的,因此,只有彻底突破和扬弃这种定义,寻找真正切合实际的文化定义,才有可能找到解决这个问题的科学方式。而社会个体生成论的文化定义则为解决这个难题提供了现实可能性。

Confidence sets based on sequential Tests

For given (small) a and β a sequential confidence set that covers the true parameter point with probability at least 1 - a and one or more specified false parameter points with probability at most β can be generated by a family of sequen-tial tests. Several situations are described where this approach would be a natural one. The following example is studied in some detail: obtain an upper (1 - α)-confidence interval for a normal mean μ (variance known) with β-protection at μ - δ(μ), where δ(.) is not bounded away from 0 so that a truly sequential procedure is mandatory. Some numerical results are presented for intervals generated by (1) sequential probability ratio tests (SPRT's), and (2) generalized sequential probability ratio tests (GSPRT's). These results indicate the superiority of the GSPRT-generated intervals over the SPRT-generated ones if expected sample size is taken as performance criterion     

Cooperation in Repeated Games When the Number of Stages is not Commonly Known

It is shown that an exponentially small departure from the common knowledge assumption on the number T of repetitions of the prisoners' dilemma already enables cooperation. More generally, with such a departure, any feasible individually rational outcome of any one-shot game can be approximated by a subgame perfect equilibrium of a finitely repeated version of that game. The sense in which the departure from common knowledge is small is as follows: (I) With probability one, the players know T with precision ±K. (ii) With probability 1 −ε, the players know T precisely; moreover, this knowledge is mutual of order εT. (iii) The deviation of T from its finite expectation is exponentially small.

When outsourcing fragments: customer creativity and technological transmutations

One of the most fundamental decisions made in firms is about what functions or activities the firm should perform within its own hierarchy, and which of these it should rely on the market to perform. Outsourcing is ‘an agreement in which one company contracts out a part of their existing internal activity to another company’. However, this article contends that outsourcing has changed, and is changing in ways that make the application of neat, legal and technically correct definitions hard to use, and even harder to apply in strategy. Under the new outsourcing paradigm, technology is not a passive ‘substance’, rather it is an active ‘force’. We aim to look at the ways in which technologies are re-shaped and transmuted by consumers. Through this analysis, we add the consumer activity to the conventional definition of outsourcing. We focus on one of the most highly anticipated and influential new products of 2007 – the Apple iPhone.
