Drawing on fieldwork in a multi‐ethnic workplace (an industrial kitchen in Denmark), this article explores immigrants' self‐directed ethnic humor in collegial relationships with Danes as it spontaneously develops and plays out in everyday work settings. Approaching ethnic humor from a symbolic interactionist perspective rather than adopting the dominant conflict approach, this article emphasizes the bonding functions of ethnic humor. The article argues that immigrants' engagement in playful behavior with ethnic stereotypes in interactions with Danes is a form of “impression management” in which they defuse ethnic stereotypes and dissociate themselves from them by building joking relationships in the workplace with Danes. The influence of competition level on referees’ decision-making was investigated. Referees’ decisions in 90 handball games (30 games X 3 competition levels) were observed in different situations related to the advantage rule, and 100 referees from two different levels of expertise were subsequently asked to offer explanations for the competition-level effects from the first part of the study. Results revealed that at the highest level of competition referees intervened less frequently with sporting sanctions, but more frequently with disciplinary sanctions. These effects were apparent mainly in immediate intervention situations and unsuccessful advantage situations, but not in successful situations. Referees explained these effects of competition level in terms of a player competence stereotype, in addition to referees’ different expertise across competition level. The implications of the findings for understanding how status-related stereotypes impact on intervention behavior are discussed. 相似文献

Social categories need to be replicated to endure. Commentaries about social practices drive replication. Commentaries increase the number of signs emblematic of this category. In contemporary nation-states, mass education, bureaucratic processes, and mass media create large participation frameworks that facilitate replication. I term these participation frameworks ‘infrastructures for ethnicity’. This paper examines two types of infrastructures that have facilitated replication of emblems of ethnicity in Indonesia. My data is drawn from a soap opera, Internet commentaries about this soap, and news stories about clothing and culture. In looking at this data, I examine how old elements that point to ‘ethnicity’ are combined with new elements, how this new combination invites commentaries, how this process increases the semiotic density of these categories, and how all of this engenders diversity in Indonesia. 相似文献

“刻板印象”这一概念引入中国已有20年。在这20年中,我国新闻传播学界对刻板印象的研究主要集中于四个方面:媒介内容中的刻板印象、使用刻板印象的原因及其效果、刻板印象的突破和“反用”、具体媒介工作流程中的刻板印象。当前我国新闻传播学界在刻板印象与媒介关系的研究中似存在如下两个尚待解决的问题:首先。对什么是“刻板印象”的界定有待廓清与统一。仅从媒介内容归纳刻板印象的内容,多少有误用概念之嫌,既不能全面揭示特定时段中刻板印象的内涵,也无助于深入探索媒介与刻板印象的复杂关系。于是,如何在廓清概念的基础上,揭示刻板印象与媒介的复杂关系,也就成了当前另一个需要进一步深入的问题。 相似文献

This paper utilizes expectations imposed by society to explain lower wages of mothers compared to non-mothers in the labor market. Social expectation, interdependence between mothers’ labor supply and childcare services, and lack of coordination between employers, employees (mothers), and childcare services explain how an economy can be caught in a ‘trap’ exhibiting large wage differences. Higher levels of human capital, increased coordination along with affordable childcare services in a more modern economy allows for specialization, increasing returns, and the possibility for a better outcome due to multiple equilibria. 相似文献

提升自主品牌形象是当前改善自主品牌消费环境、扩大自主品牌消费市场的重要现实命题,而厘清自主品牌负面刻板印象生成的根源及影响因素是探讨自主品牌形象提升的关键驱动因素与战略对策的理论基础。首先以8个论坛的受众跟帖为例,运用扎根理论进行探索性研究,发现负面企业形象、负面国货形象、负面政府形象、媒体渲染、国货意识淡漠和社会规范压力等6个主范畴是导致自主品牌负面刻板印象生成的主要影响因素;然后将范畴作为测量问项,将主范畴作为潜变量,进行问卷调查和实证分析,结果表明,6个主范畴均对自主品牌负面刻板印象存在显著的正向影响。在此基础上,根据自主品牌负面刻板印象生成的影响因素,提炼出自主品牌形象提升的5大关键驱动因素,即企业形象驱动因素、政府形象驱动因素、媒介框架驱动因素、消费者情感驱动因素和社会规范驱动因素,并对其影响效应及对策措施进行了探讨,建构了自主品牌形象提升的关键驱动因素影响效应模型。 相似文献
