Sightseeing Buses: Cruising,Timing and the Montage of Attractions

Abstract

This article focuses on spatial performances, modes of vision and touring practices enabled by sightseeing bus‐tours. Thereby, three aspects of the process by which these buses transform urban space into destination space are discussed. First, bus‐tours delineate, as they move, a unique geography of routes and stops, which is based on structured improvisation. Second, guiding practices of tour guides are crucial for assembling together a destination and their success depends on timing. Third, tourist experiences enabled by sightseeing bus‐tours involve a ‘cruise‐ship‐like’ style of movement and a mode of vision reminiscent of the ‘montage of coming attractions’ characteristic of film‐trailers. The article concludes by stressing the multiple spatial displacements involved in bus‐tour production of destination space.

海陆丰赛会演剧研究

赛会演剧这一古代文化现象在粤东海陆丰地区仍有遗存,通过深入的田野调查研究发现,海陆丰人文土壤中具有浓郁的世俗宗教特色,赛神庙会是乡社宗族文化的载体,这种文化载体滋生并哺育了白字戏、竹马戏等民间戏剧样式,也使得传统戏剧呈现出浓郁的世俗宗教色彩。这种赛会祭祀戏剧具有不同于文人戏剧、观赏性戏剧的价值标准,它是典型的民间戏剧。     

Land,territory and commons: voices and visions from the struggles

ABSTRACT

All over the world, financial capitalism and extractivism are appropriating land as if it was nothing more than a commodity, a mere ‘factor’ of production that can be exploited to generate financial returns. Movements and activists are organizing, resisting, protecting and promoting life-giving visions against this continuous enclosure of living beings and paces: they use their bodies, laws, educational projects, histories and visions to regain control over territory as a political space, self-determine and create solidarities. In the act resistance, they are the target of moral, physical and legal violence. They and their ideas are criminalized, disciplined, punished and in some cases exterminated. In this contribution, activists from the Basque Country, Guatemala, Kenya and the Six Nations and a group of academics get together to learn from each other, support the ongoing search for common vocabularies and identify possible milestones of a coordinated and international strategy for a life-enhancing future.     

“以意逆志”论——中国传统文学释义方式的现代审视

“以意逆志”是孟子提出的一个有关文学释义的纲领性理论命题。围绕这个纲领性的理论命题 ,中国古代的文论家和批评家对文学解释活动中释义者与释义对象之间的关系以及文学释义的具体途径进行了深入而辩证的探讨 :既充分尊重接受者和释义者的主体意识———“意” ,又强调文学解释活动最终不能背离对作者和作品原意———“志”的理解和把握 ,同时还把文学解释活动看成是释义者之“意”与释义对象之“志”通过“逆”的方式相互交融而形成新的意义的过程。“以意逆志”的文学释义方式比较好地解决了西方释义学理论无法解决的某些理论难题 ,其中所蕴涵的文学解释学思想在今天仍然有着重要的意义和价值。     

中国现代性的景观与品格 --认识后古典远缘杂种文化

在顺现代说和逆现代说之外,需要倡导第三种思风即在反思中重构现代。中国现代性的景观体现为扩张语境、强势他者、后古典、平常身份及复兴之梦。中国现代性的独特品格表现在它是一种后古典远缘杂种文化。通过远缘杂交,它与中国古典性文化的近缘杂种品格区别开来;而通过后古典性,它得以与地球上其他现代性文化区别开来。它具体呈现为后古典语文、双重时空体验和硬抽软具机制等形态。与有关中国现代文化已经完全数典忘祖这类看法不同,我相信它与自身的古典传统具有内在的息息相通关联,体现了同样的开放、变化与杂交精神。

Waiting for Godot? On some of the obstacles for developing counter-forces in higher education

In the name of the imperatives of the knowledge-economy, the European public university has been under attack since the beginning of the 2000s. Everywhere in Europe, budgets have been cut and departments considered as being useless eliminated. Reactions have been weak. How can this be explained? How can one challenge the dominant discourse on higher education? This article explores some of the power dynamics that prevent alternative visions from developing.
