ABSTRACTAcademic studies of employee perceptions of and engagement with responsible gambling (RG) provide important insight into how employees engage with RG, but typically treat employees as a singular entity. Employees in different departments, however, have different work experiences that affect their likelihood of directly interacting with gamblers. It is conceivable that degree of contact with gamblers affects employees’ opinions about RG. To examine this possibility, we surveyed cohorts of employees at MGM Resorts International (MGM) (N = 2,192) regarding their (1) perceptions of RG programs, (2) behaviors and beliefs about gambling, and (3) comfort with MGM’s corporate RG environment. Using MANCOVA, with years employed in the gambling industry as a covariate, we observed that employees in departments with less direct contact with gamblers were more likely to perceive RG programs to be effective at MGM than employees who have more direct contact with gamblers. In addition, employees who work in the Food, Beverage, & Retail departments were more likely to hold misconceptions about gambling than employees in Back of House operations. The differences in how departments view RG programs suggest that one-size-fits-all approaches to employee training might not be suitable for RG topics, and that position-based training might be necessary. 相似文献

ABSTRACTTo estimate the effectiveness of gambling exclusion programmes, previous research focused on changes in gambling behaviour post-exclusion. Although other mental health problems, especially co-morbid mental disorders, may be crucial for relapse and recovery of gambling-related problems, these factors have rarely been studied in excluders. Therefore, this study aimed to assess a comprehensive mental health status of excluders using well-validated diagnostic instruments. Fifty-eight casino excluders participated in face-to-face diagnostic interviews and completed several validated questionnaires (e.g. Stinchfield Questionnaire, Brief Symptom Inventory). Retrospective temporal sequences of diagnosed mental disorders, help-seeking behaviour and exclusion were examined. The majority of excluders reported impairments in mental health aspects. About three-quarters met criteria of lifetime gambling disorder, more than half in the last 12 months whereby screening and diagnostic measures correlated moderately. Other mental disorders were frequent, especially affective and substance-related disorders and typically preceded the onset of gambling disorder. Six years passed between self-awareness of gambling problems and help-seeking. Two more years passed until exclusion. Frequent mental health problems suggest the need for individually tailored support beyond exclusion programmes (e.g. psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, counselling services). Late help-seeking and exclusion entry claim for improved early detection and intervention concepts that consider underlying mental disorders. 相似文献

This article examined social issues surrounding casino gambling among older adults both nationally and in the state of North
Dakota. An exploratory review of gambling trends among older adults and an examination of policies to protect older gamblers
revealed that older adults are targeted by the gaming industry as a lucrative market (Singh et al. J Retail Leisure Property
2007, 6(1):61–68). The authors used the national literature to frame their qualitative study, which explored gambling issues
among older adults in North Dakota from the perspective of six counselors trained in gambling addiction who provide treatment
services in the state. Findings indicated that relatively few policies existed at the state and national levels to protect
older, more vulnerable adults who gamble. Further, the six casinos in North Dakota were viewed as very effective in marketing
their casino gaming opportunities to older citizens by the gambling treatment providers interviewed. Additionally, barriers
to gambling addiction treatment involved lack of available services and distance to receive services in this rural state.
Based on the findings of this study, social policy changes which could lead to increased protection for older adult gamblers
in the state were included. 相似文献

Improved Self-exclusion Program: Preliminary Results 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0

The gambling industry has offered self-exclusion programs for quite a long time. Such measures are designed to limit access
to gaming opportunities and provide problem gamblers with the help they need to cease or limit their gambling behaviour. However,
few studies have empirically evaluated these programs. This study has three objectives: (1) to observe the participation in
an improved self-exclusion program that includes an initial voluntary evaluation, phone support, and a mandatory meeting,
(2) to evaluate satisfaction and usefulness of this service as perceived by self-excluders, (3) to measure the preliminary
impact of this improved program. One hundred sixteen self-excluders completed a questionnaire about their satisfaction and
their perception of the usefulness during the mandatory meeting. Among those participants, 39 attended an initial meeting.
Comparisons between data collected at the initial meeting and data taken at the final meeting were made for those 39 participants.
Data showed that gamblers chose the improved self-exclusion program 75% of the time; 25% preferred to sign a regular self-exclusion
contract. Among those who chose the improved service, 40% wanted an initial voluntary evaluation and 37% of these individuals
actually attended that meeting. Seventy percent of gamblers came to the mandatory meeting, which was a required condition
to end their self-exclusion. The majority of participants were satisfied with the improved self-exclusion service and perceived
it as useful. Major improvements were observed between the final and the initial evaluation on time and money spent, consequences
of gambling, DSM-IV score, and psychological distress. The applicability of an improved self-exclusion program is discussed
and, as shown in our study, the inclusion of a final mandatory meeting might not be so repulsive for self-excluders. Future
research directives are also proposed.

At the beginning of 2000, some educational initiatives in the field of responsible gambling resulted in the implementation
of Onsite Casino Information Centres (OCICs). However, no study has yet empirically evaluated the impact of visiting an OCIC.
This paper includes two studies evaluating the OCIC Au Centre du Hasard, located in Montreal, Quebec. The goal of the first study was to identify the profile of the visitors and to assess their
appreciation. After a visit, 336 patrons accepted to complete a pen and paper questionnaire. The goal of the second study
was to evaluate the impact of a visit on the perceptions about randomness and the gambling behaviours of the visitors. For
this study, 67 visitors were evaluated before, after, and 3 months following a visit and their results were compared to a
control group. Data showed that most visitors were seniors, occasional slot machine gamblers, and in control of their gambling
activities. The majority of guests greatly appreciated their visit. A visit to Au Centre du Hasard seemed to modify the misconceptions towards the notion of randomness but not the gambling behaviours. These gains were maintained
at 3-month follow-up. Results with respect to other prevention programs are discussed, and future research avenues are suggested.

In a well-publicized analysis of visitor suicides in three casinoareas (Atlantic City, Las Vegas, and Reno), elevated suicide risk among interstate visitors was attributed to the presence of legalized gambling. A fundamental limitation of the analysis, however, was the absence of estimatesfor at-risk populations. In the present paper, an analysis of 1995 visitor-suicide rates (incorporating estimates for at-risk population) for 310 large UScounties, including places both with and without gambling casinos, yields no evidence to support a gambling-suicide relationship. 相似文献

Numerous studies have documented that under-age gambling is quite common. The present study employs interviews of 48 university students who gambled under-age to determine the motives and methods associated with casino gambling by minors. The information gathered in these interviews indicates that access to casinos is easily attained, that the risk of exposure once gambling is minimal, and the motivations of under-age gamblers differ in important ways from that of adults, as access to alcohol, accompanying parents, and the desire to experience the “forbidden fruit” of casino gambling are commonly mentioned motivations by under-age gamblers.

Research on the relationship between casinos and crime has yielded mixed conclusions. Some authors argue that casinos are
crime attractors and provide fertile grounds for disorder in the surrounding communities. Others claim that the impact of
casinos on the crime problem has been over-stated and that casinos in themselves are not crime generators. Relying on calls
for service and incidents known to the police, this research reveals the specific spatial and temporal characteristics of
all criminal and disorderly behaviors around casino venues.

Controllable superstition and its relationship with enduring and behavioural involvement in gambling
Lawrence Hoc Nang Fong Desmond Lam Davis Ka Chio Fong 《International Gambling Studies》2018,18(1):92-110
Superstition is a salient belief given the desire of individuals to control outcomes in daily life, particularly in the context of gambling. This study contributes to the literature by distinguishing controllable superstition from uncontrollable superstition. Furthermore, their relationships with enduring involvement and, subsequently, behavioural involvement, including gambling frequency and variety, are examined. Using partial least squares structural equation modelling, the analysis of data collected from 496 casino gamblers indicates that uncontrollable superstition has two sub-dimensions, which include impersonal outcome and personal state. Controllable superstition positively predicts gambling frequency and variety via enduring involvement, whereas uncontrollable superstition has no effect on enduring involvement. The findings indicate that superstition should not be treated as a unidimensional construct, as controllable and uncontrollable superstitions have different effects on consequential variables. Practical implications are provided for gambling regulators and casino operators. 相似文献
