This paper explores the “separation guilt” of women who initiate divorce. The paper argues that the gender-specific processes
of separation individuation and socialization that women undergo in childhood make them vulnerable to similar guilt feelings
when they initiate divorce, only towards the husband they are leaving. It further argues that these feelings may impair their
post-divorce adjustment. The paper illustrates these points with two case studies, one showing how the woman’s separation
guilt thwarted the development of new intimacy, the other showing how it impaired her maternal functioning. Recommendations
are made for treatment and research.

Research has revealed many detrimental effects of divorce upon children often related to ongoing conflict between biological parents. A therapeutic model, demonstrated by a case example, is presented which targets the conflict between divorced parents. This therapeutic approach is based upon negotiating cooperation among custodial and nonastodial parents. This is accomplished by clarifying the changed relationships resulting from divorce between the adults and children allowing all members of the divorced families to grieve the loss of predivorce relationships. Distinct new relationships are defined between all family members which reduce the need for adults to compete in relationships with the children. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This study examines the relationship between the making of financial provision by nonresident parents and children's self-esteem in a Chinese context. It is found that the relationship depends much on the dynamics of the nonresident parents' participation in other areas of family relationships, such as parental conflict. As this is an exploratory study with a small sample size, the results are suggestive rather than conclusive. The study contributes by indicating the possible cultural difference in the family dynamics of the post-divorce families in the Chinese context of Hong Kong and the West, and the need to take into account the perspectives of both the resident and nonresident parents in studying nonresident parents' post-divorce involvement. 相似文献

Data derived from a qualitative study with 32 remar- ried couples (N = 64), were analyzed to assess factors related to the adoption of alternative stepparenting styles. Five stepparent styles were found: the biological parent, the "super good" stepmother, the detached, the uncertain, and the friendship style. The choice of styles was influenced bv the various expectations and behaviors of the step- parent, stepchild,-spouse, and nonresidential parent. Implications fbr familv education and counseling approaches with stepfamilies are discuked. 相似文献
