The influence of urbanization on forest stand dynamics in Northwestern Oregon

Urbanization has been shown to affect forest stand characteristics in nearby natural areas. The purpose of this study was to examine forest structure in a naturally forested area, Forest Park in Portland, OR and adjacent forested land. Tree community structure was examined at 25 sites distributed along an urban-rural land use gradient. All trees in three quadrats per site were identified to species and the diameter at breast height was measured. ANOVA was used to examine differences in species richness and diversity, and tree density and importance value among four categorical areas. Tree species richness and diversity, and the density, diameter and importance values of shade-tolerant (later successional) species of trees decreased with urbanization. Sites nearer the city of Portland had significantly fewer shade tolerant saplings and young trees and were dominated by earlier successional species of trees as compared with sites at the far end of the study area. The forest structure in the city section of the park was very similar to that in the significantly younger middle section. The lack of young shade tolerant saplings and young trees appears to be the result of urbanization, although the mechanisms for such a loss are unknown at this time. Such a lack of recruitment may interfere with normal successional processes at more urban areas of the park.

《重生》是当代英国女作家巴克1991年出版的第一部战争题材小说,描写传统文化意识形态中的战争规约对人造成的压抑,探讨人如何摆脱精神困境的重生之途。战争规约中对男子汉精神的期许和战争正义性的期许给参战军人带来了巨大的精神压力,从而造成＂弹震症＂的发生。小说通过里弗斯医生的治疗过程强调了个人的本真意识,即＂回忆性意识＂,并通过重建个人叙事形成与上述传统意识的对话,进而突破人们意识中传统价值观的牢笼,认清战争与人性对立的本质,重新获得精神的救赎。     

Large urban developments as the new driver for land development in Jeddah

Land development in most Saudi cities including Jeddah is generated by formal land subdivision and informal land development usually referred to as unplanned settlements. Both types of developments contributed to urban sprawl and other urban challenges. Jeddah Municipality attempted to improve land development by encouraging large urban developments. Recently, Jeddah Municipality approved four large urban developments which appear to manifest encouraging implications for urban growth and land development that this paper aims to explore. The paper examines the policy and market contexts that govern land development in general and large urban developments in particular, in order to pave the way to uncover their implications for city growth and land development. The data gathered for this purpose is drawn from published and unpublished reports from relevant authorities. It is found that large urban developments as new mechanisms of land development appear incapable of overcoming key challenges that face city growth and existing land development.     

Perfect Forward Simulation via Simulated Tempering

Several authors discuss how the simulated tempering scheme provides a very simple mechanism for introducing regenerations within a Markov chain. In this article we explain how regenerative simulated tempering schemes provide a very natural mechanism for perfect simulation. We use this to provide a perfect simulation algorithm, which uses a single-sweep forward-simulation without the need for recursively searching through negative times. We demonstrate this algorithm in the context of several examples.
