Coordinating County Based Services for the Frail Elderly

The aging network is fraught with fragmentation. Services to the elderly are administered out of multiple agencies and departments at all levels of government. This article discusses the approach taken by one county to diminish the level of fragmentation to frail elders by a cooperative agreement between key county departments providing services to the aged.     

Applying stage-gate processes to technology development—Experience from six hardware-oriented companies

The stage gate model has been proposed for application to uncertain technology development. Reports on industrial experience from such implementations are quite limited, however. This led us to explore in six companies what adaptations have been made to facilitate the model's usefulness for technology development and the companies’ experiences from their practical application of the model. Our results indicate that aspects proven important for the operational success, or failure, of the model include the level of adaptation to the characteristics of technology development and a more flexible use than that normally found in product development.     

《赵氏孤儿》在十八世纪英国的改编

《赵氏孤儿》是我国最早传入欧洲的戏剧,也是18世纪唯一传入欧洲的中国戏剧。18世纪的英国至少有3个《赵氏孤儿》的改编版,分别是1741年威廉·哈切特的《中国孤儿:一出历史悲剧》、1756年托马斯·富兰克林翻译的伏尔泰的《中国孤儿》和1759年亚瑟·谋飞的《中国孤儿》。这3个版本借鉴了原作不同的情节,表达了改编者不同的诉求。考察这3个改编版本,可以揭示中国戏剧与英国戏剧的融合,让我们在一个侧面了解《赵氏孤儿》在18世纪英国的传播状貌。     

Examining the need for cultural adaptations to an evidence-based parent training program targeting the prevention of child maltreatment

Evidence-based behavioral parent training programs (BPTs) have been recommended as a primary prevention strategy for child maltreatment, and use of BPTs is increasing. As these programs are implemented in new contexts and among new populations, the cultural relevance of these programs and need for adaptations or modifications must be considered. The purpose of this study was to assess the types of cultural adaptations that are being made to a widely implemented BPT, SafeCare, by providers working with families involved in the child welfare system, and to explore the need for more systematic adaptations. Eleven SafeCare providers, from six states, participated in individual, semi-structured interviews. Overall, the providers did not recommend systematic adaptations of the model for specific ethnic groups. However, they provided general and specific information regarding SafeCare components that require adaptation on a case-by-case basis, which is likely to be applicable to many BPTs. More research is needed to develop clear guidance about when and how to assess the need for cultural adaptations and how to institute adaptations that improve rather than weaken evidence-based programs. By sharing data and experiences, purveyors can contribute to the body of knowledge about adaptation.

广告已成为人们生活中不可缺少的一部分,对广告语的研究也已受到越来越多的关注。本文意图运用胡庚申教授提出的生态翻译学理论对广告妙语翻译的译例进行分析,从语言维、文化维、交际维以及美学层面探析它们的妙处,为其他广告翻译提供指导。     

The Prison Lesbian Revisited

Abstract

One aspect of women's imprisonment that has received consistent scholarly and public interest is homosexuality. These experiences are generally seen as a subcultural adaptation to the stresses and deprivations of the environment, that is, as situational, and little attention has been given to the implications they might have for the sexual identity of the women involved or to the possibility that some women may continue involvement in same-sex relationships after prison. In-depth interviews with 40 incarcerated women were conducted to explore their experiences with same-sex relationships in prison. Some condemned same-sex relationships but others became involved in them for companionship and other reasons. While some women saw their involvements as limited to prison, others were questioning their sexual identity and thought they might continue the same or other same-sex relationships on the outside.     

论韩国移民与山东半岛居民的文化适应问题

随着我国改革开放的不断深入及沿海城市国际化程度的日益提高,山东半岛已成为具有国际特色和各民族融合的外籍人居住区域之一。尤其是韩国人的大量移居,不仅促进了山东半岛的工业、旅游、交通、信息等各个产业的加速发展,而且促进了山东半岛的经济与多元文化的快速发展,增加了当地居民的收入。然而,不同国籍、不同文化人群在相互接触、交流中,不可避免地发生生产方式、生活方式、风俗习惯等方面的不适应,表现为不同程度的文化变迁与适应过程。     

Ties that Bind: Cultural Interpretations of Delayed Adulthood in Western Europe and Japan1

Throughout the developed world, young adults hit hard by declining labor market opportunities and rising housing costs have been staying in the natal home. Particularly hard hit are the weak welfare states of southern Europe and Japan, while the social democracies have continued to support the residential independence of young people at very early ages. This article considers the divergent cultural interpretations of this pattern of “delayed departure” in order to show that the same demographic configurations may be coded quite differently.     

The effects of adapting their home on the meaning of home for families with a disabled child

This article describes part of a mixed-method study investigating family and professional perspectives on home adaptations for disabled children. The methods were an online survey of staff involved in adaptations processes (n =39), semi-structured interviews with families with disabled children (n = 48) and an online survey for families (n = 16). One of the wider study’s recommendations was that families need to be enabled to engage with processes proactively. This article focuses on families’ experiences of the meaning attributed to adapting the home and highlights that, although satisfied with the completed adaptation, families were dissatisfied with the process they had been through. Thus, despite the need for the meaning of home being central to the adaptation process, families felt excluded from the process as it progressed. This had a negative impact on the continuing use of the adaptation and affected the meaning of home for families with a disabled child.
