Flows and Pauses in the Urban Logistics Landscape: The Municipal Regulation of Shipping Container Mobilities

Abstract

The mobilities turn has demonstrated the importance of the social, cultural and political implications of travel for a variety of modes, though largely focused on people and vehicles, not freight. The transport of goods by shipping container has become the predominant means of freight transport since the 1960s, shaping places from port cities to rural distribution centers. This paper uses two North American case studies to explore temporary immobilities or pauses in the flows of shipping containers, showing that the problems containers pose to the places they pass through are not a function of the objects themselves, but their state of mobility. Pauses are important as a category of mobility because of the consequences of regulations that attempt to eliminate or redirect them.

     

The Critical Role of Ocean Container Transport in Global Supply Chain Performance

With supply chains distributed across global markets, ocean container transport now is a critical element of any such supply chain. We identify key characteristics of ocean container transport from a supply chain perspective. We find that unlike continental (road) transport, service offerings tend to be consolidated in few service providers, and a strong focus exists on maximization of capital intensive resources. Based on the characteristics of ocean container transport as part of global supply chains, we list a number of relevant and challenging research areas and associated questions.     

Containerisation: Moving Things and Boxing Ideas

Abstract

This paper contrasts the standard account of the relationship between containerisation and globalisation with a picture of multiple mobilities and moorings. I suggest that an account of containerisation cannot so easily be contained because sameness, security, plenty and economic rationality have also produced the aporias of difference, danger and emptiness as well as a diverse range of cultural representations. I take this to be a specific representation of a more general argument against the reduction in complex social and material mobilities to a determinist account of technology or a teleological version of history.     

Knitting an action net to reduce plastic waste: reusable takeout food containers in New York City

ABSTRACT

The paper presents an analysis of actions undertaken to promote and implement reusable takeout food containers in New York City in response to the overuse of plastic disposable single-use containers. It discusses, in detail, the emergence of an action net around this issue and business models for reusables. The paper contributes to the theoretical discussion on network emergence by analyzing the formation and axiological tensions within the action net. Currently, market solutions are the only ones exercised and perceived as achievable by network participants, who consider market conditions as both given and unchallengeable. The paper argues that chances for network expansion depend on network participants’ perceptions of the limitations of social change.

“I’ve changed my mind; I don’t want to go home”

Abstract

This article considers the motif of porosity and its opposite, impenetrability, in relation to the home or places where we feel at home. It discusses ambiguities in how the physical boundaries of the home—but also of the perceived human subject—are portrayed in the technology-pervaded world of the dystopian science fiction narrative Total Recall. Tracing the story from the 1966 novel by Philip K. Dick, through the 1990 film to the recent remake (2012), allows for a consideration of the changes in our understanding of how the boundaries between the home and its other are culturally conceived and what happens when the integrity of these boundaries are put into question. Despite their differences, we argue that all three narratives use the built structures of walls and the imagery of the container as a way of portraying the basic conflict of an outer world that tries to take possession of the protagonist’s inner life. Tracing narrative shifts, we suggest, can become a vehicle for understanding the ongoing negotiation of boundaries of the “self,” the human body, the home and even the city, and the implications these cultural negotiations have across the period from 1966 to 2012.

史密簋铭文与齐国的方伯地位

根据史密簋铭文所透现的史实 ,从师俗、史密的身份、国属入手 ,考证两人是兼地方与中央双重官职身份的西周重臣 ,他们只能来自于齐国 ,故而周王命他们率领以齐师为主力的诸侯国军队合击南夷。齐国是西周的重要方伯 ,拥有对东方的征伐大权 ,只要周王命令 ,就可以实行征伐 ,无需周王另派将领统帅自己的军队。当时周王朝衰微 ,周王也没有能力来指挥齐国的军队     

"舟"作形旁两解

"舟"作形旁,意义一般解作"船只",《说文解字》舟下所属共11个字都作此解,但其中关于"朕"、"般"、"服"三字形义关系的分析值得商榷。文章借助考古资料,联系古人祭祀祖先的祼礼仪式,推论"舟"作形旁还有一解,即舟形器物。以此,对"朕"、"般"、"服"等字的本义重新作了尝试性探讨。
