“Who generates this city”? Socialist strategy in contemporary London

This essay, based on a “militant ethnography” of the attempts of the small radical grassroots activist group, Our London (a pseudonym), to mobilize a collective oppositional politics through activities around an election campaign, engages critically with E. Laclau and C. Mouffe's arguments on discourse and collectivity in Hegemony and Socialist Strategy (London: Verso, 1985). I argue, on the basis of my findings, that while their model does provide insights that help describe the process of building collectivity from among disparate perspectives and identities, we need to go beyond a focus on discourse alone and consider the ways politics is shaped by material contexts. This is necessary if we are to understand the continued appeal of class politics as well as the difficulties in mobilizing collectivity in highly unequal and fragmented cities. From an activist perspective, the essay also highlights how developing a conception of collective interests and a critique of overarching systems of exploitation can be important in building political unity.     

The Interlocking of Gender with Nationality,Race, Ethnicity and Class: the Narratives of Women in Hotel Work

Whilst gender in the workplace is has been extensively researched, investigation into how gender interacts with other factors such as ethnicity and class has been less explicitly considered. This article explores the interlocking of gender with other categories such as class, ethnicity, race and nationality in the context of hotel work. It draws on the narratives of women describing their experiences of working in hotels. Findings from this empirically based examination suggest that gendered and other representations at work are not constructed as a process of adding difference on to difference, where categories are considered as separate and fixed. Instead, what emerges is a negotiation of the many categories shaping identities at work, which exist simultaneously and shift according to context.

Social inclusion through employment: the marketisation of employment support for people with learning disabilities in the United Kingdom

Employment for people with learning difficulties is considered key to their social inclusion. This contradicts the perceived un-employability of people with learning difficulties that has been part of their social identities throughout their history hitherto. The national rate of employment for people with learning difficulties remains extremely low and has barely changed in the 20?years between 1990 and 2010. This paper investigates links between learning disabilities and employment, drawing on interview-based research. It analyses the quality of experience of the minority in employment to consider whether employment can serve the inclusive purpose expected of it.

Translating Spirituality: Universalism and Particularism in the Diffusion of Spiritual Care from the United States to Israel

Research on the transnational diffusion of ideas and practices shows how cultural objects go through translation, adaptation, and vernacularization when implemented in new localities. Less attention is given to the translators themselves and their heterogeneous and often conflicting visions. Drawing on the notion of transnational social fields (TSF s), this article investigates how cultural objects get vernacularized differently in different parts of the TSF , demonstrating how processes of translation reflect larger social and political struggles over questions of identity. As a case study, we focus on the attempt of actors from Israel and the United States to institutionalize spiritual care in Israeli health‐care organizations. The analysis reveals how spiritual care functioned as a porous cultural object, open to a wide range of interpretations and debates. While actors in New York saw in spiritual care the opportunity to bridge to Israeli Jews and create a global Jewish identity, Israeli actors split between using spiritual care as a vehicle for creating a local Israeli Jewish identity and seeing in spiritual care the opportunity to establish universal identities, broader than the Jewish one. The disagreement and conflicts between the groups influenced the translation process, turning it into a contentious struggle that involved different positions on the continuum between particularism and universalism.

社群互动与认同重构———以东太湖流域的一个移民社会为例

污名是移民在地化过程中常见的现象,但学界对于污名与认同的关系的认识仍有待深入。通过对一个位于吴江东太湖流域的移民社会的考察,发现移民在与本地人的污名互动中形成了多样化的认同分类,即原籍认同分类“河南人 - 苏北人 - 本地人”、地方认同分类“太湖人 - 高田人”以及污名分类“太湖强盗 - 高田蛮子”。 污名互动表面上制造了社会的分裂,但实际上强调了不同社群的共存关系,其对于移民完成在地化和认同重构具有重要意义。 从污名切入进行移民认同的研究时,应在污名互动中全面考察互动各方的污名规范与污名实践,从而解答充满污名的社会如何具备共同体的可能性的问题。     

铸牢中华民族共同体意识视角下归侨群体的“五个认同”研究——以广西侨港镇为例

作为中国最大的印支难民安置点,广西侨港镇成立至今已有四十余年的历史。在侨港镇经济快速发展,社会各项事业全面进步的同时,当地归侨群体对伟大祖国、中华民族、中华文化、中国共产党、中国特色社会主义的认同不断深化提升,其中华民族共同体意识日益形成并得以巩固铸牢。侨港镇的事实经验不仅为铸牢中华民族共同体意识的学术研究提供了个案参考,也为其他归侨安置地区相关工作的实际开展提供了借鉴启发。
