Microtubules are part of the structural network within a cell's cytoplasm, providing structural support as well as taking part in many of the cellular processes. A large body of data provide evidence that dynamics of microtubules in a cell is reponsible for the performance of many critical cellular functions such as cell division. In this article, we study the effect of four different isoforms of a protein tau on microtubule dynamics using growth curve models. The results show that a linear growth curve model is sufficient to explain the data. Moreover, we find that a mutated version of a 3-repeat tau protein has a similar effect as a 4-repeat tau protein on microtubule dynamics. The latter findings conform with the biological understanding of the effect of the protein tau on microtubule dynamics.  相似文献

In an organization, the manufacturing process of a dry cell battery was suffering from the problem of frequent stoppages in the assembly line. The complete battery manufacturing operation is highly automated and mechanized. It was suspected that excessive variation in overall height of bobbin was the major reason for such stoppages. The bobbin, the inside part of a dry cell battery acting as cathode, is formed by the battery extrusion process. A planned experiment was carried out on the extrusion process that identified the setting of extrusion machines and the amount of water content in the cathode mixture as the parameters causing variation in the bobbin characteristics. The problem of frequent stoppages was eliminated when appropriate action was taken on these two parameters. Finally, multivariate and univariate control schemes were developed for online control of the bobbin characteristics.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Despite the popularity of the general linear mixed model for data analysis, power and sample size methods and software are not generally available for commonly used test statistics and reference distributions. Statisticians resort to simulations with homegrown and uncertified programs or rough approximations which are misaligned with the data analysis. For a wide range of designs with longitudinal and clustering features, we provide accurate power and sample size approximations for inference about fixed effects in the linear models we call reversible. We show that under widely applicable conditions, the general linear mixed-model Wald test has noncentral distributions equivalent to well-studied multivariate tests. In turn, exact and approximate power and sample size results for the multivariate Hotelling–Lawley test provide exact and approximate power and sample size results for the mixed-model Wald test. The calculations are easily computed with a free, open-source product that requires only a web browser to use. Commercial software can be used for a smaller range of reversible models. Simple approximations allow accounting for modest amounts of missing data. A real-world example illustrates the methods. Sample size results are presented for a multicenter study on pregnancy. The proposed study, an extension of a funded project, has clustering within clinic. Exchangeability among the participants allows averaging across them to remove the clustering structure. The resulting simplified design is a single-level longitudinal study. Multivariate methods for power provide an approximate sample size. All proofs and inputs for the example are in the supplementary materials (available online).  相似文献

A geometrical interpretation of the classical tests of the relation between two sets of variables is presented. One of the variable sets may be considered as fixed and then we have a multivariate regression model. When the Wilks’ lambda distribution is viewed geometrically it is obvious that the two special cases, theF distribution and the HotellingT 2 distribution are equivalent. From the geometrical perspective it is also obvious that the test statistic and thep-value are unchanged if the responses and the predictors are interchanged.  相似文献

Investigations of multivariate population are pretty common in applied researches, and the two-way crossed factorial design is a common design used at the exploratory phase in industrial applications. When assumptions such as multivariate normality and covariance homogeneity are violated, the conventional wisdom is to resort to nonparametric tests for hypotheses testing. In this paper we compare the performances, and in particular the power, of some nonparametric and semi-parametric methods that have been developed in recent years. Specifically, we examined resampling methods and robust versions of classical multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) tests. In a simulation study, we generate data sets with different configurations of factor''s effect, number of replicates, number of response variables under null hypothesis, and number of response variables under alternative hypothesis. The objective is to elicit practical advice and guides to practitioners regarding the sensitivity of the tests in the various configurations, the tradeoff between power and type I error, the strategic impact of increasing number of response variables, and the favourable performance of one test when the alternative is sparse. A real case study from an industrial engineering experiment in thermoformed packaging production is used to compare and illustrate the application of the various methods.  相似文献

Generalized discriminant analysis based on distances   总被引:14,自引:1,他引:13
This paper describes a method of generalized discriminant analysis based on a dissimilarity matrix to test for differences in a priori groups of multivariate observations. Use of classical multidimensional scaling produces a low‐dimensional representation of the data for which Euclidean distances approximate the original dissimilarities. The resulting scores are then analysed using discriminant analysis, giving tests based on the canonical correlations. The asymptotic distributions of these statistics under permutations of the observations are shown to be invariant to changes in the distributions of the original variables, unlike the distributions of the multi‐response permutation test statistics which have been considered by other workers for testing differences among groups. This canonical method is applied to multivariate fish assemblage data, with Monte Carlo simulations to make power comparisons and to compare theoretical results and empirical distributions. The paper proposes classification based on distances. Error rates are estimated using cross‐validation.  相似文献

In this paper we are interested in the determination of the rank of the random effect covariance matrix in an unbalanced components of covariance model, and obtain some strongly consistent estimates of the rank based on eigenstructure methods.  相似文献

This article presents procedures for testing hypothesis and interval estimation of the common mean vector in MANOVA models when the covariance matrices are unknown and unequal. The methods are based on the concepts of generalized p-value and generalized confidence interval. Some important statistical properties of the exact test and confidence region are given. For two multivariate normal populations, a minor modification to the combined tests given by Zhou and Mathew (1994a Zhou , L. P. , Mathew , T. ( 1994a ). Combining independent tests in multivariate linear models . J. Multivariate Anal. 51 : 265276 . [Google Scholar]) is proposed. Some simulation results to compare the performance of the proposed tests with others are reported. The simulation results indicate that new tests have significant gain in the power.  相似文献

In this paper we consider test of dimensionality in MANOVA model. For this testing problem, the likelihood ratio (=LR) test, Lawley-Hotelling (=LH) type test and Bartlett-Nanda-Pillai (=BNP) type test are often used. We obtain the asymptotic expansions of powers of these tests under the local alternatives. Also Bahadur exact slopes of these tests are obtained. Based on these results, we obtain a unified opinion concerning comparison of LR test, LH type test and BNP type test.  相似文献

Scheffé’s mixed model, generalized for application to multivariate repeated measures, is known as the multivariate mixed model (MMM). The primary advantages the MMM are (1) the minimum sample size required to conduct an analysis is smaller than for competing procedures and (2) for certain covariance structures, the MMM analysis is more powerful than its competitors. The primary disadvantage is that the MMM makes a very restrictive covariance assumption; namely multivariate sphericity. This paper shows, first, that even minor departures from multivariate sphericity inflate the size of MMM based tests. Accordingly, MMM analyses, as computed in release 4.0 of SPSS MANOVA (SPSS Inc., 1990), can not be recommended unless it is known that multivariate sphericity is satisfied. Second, it is shown that a new Box-type (Box, 1954) Δ-corrected MMM test adequately controls test size unless departure from multivariate sphericity is severe or the covariance matrix departs substantially from a multiplicative-Kronecker structure. Third, power functions of adjusted MMM tests for selected covariance and noncentrality structures are compared to those of doubly multivariate methods that do not require multivariate sphericity. Based on relative efficiency evaluations, the adjusted MMM analyses described in this paper can be recommended only when sample sizes are very small or there is reason to believe that multivariate sphericity is nearly satisfied. Neither the e-adjusted analysis suggested in the SPSS MANOVA output (release 4.0) nor the adjusted analysis suggested by Boik (1988) can be recommended at all.  相似文献
