This paper surveys commercially available MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows based microcomputer software for survival analysis, especially for Cox proportional hazards regression and parametric survival models. Emphasis is given to functionality, documentation, generality, and flexibility of software. A discussion of the need for software integration is given, which leads to the conclusion that survival analysis software not closely tied to a well-designed package will not meet an analyst's general needs. Some standalone programs are good tools for teaching the theory of some survival analysis procedures, but they may not teach the student good data analysis techniques such as critically examining regression assumptions. We contrast typical software with a general, integrated, modeling framework that is available with S-PLUS.  相似文献

This paper examines the systems development life cycle (SDLC) as one major way to improve successful development, implementation and use of computer applications in human services. The systems development life cycle of a hospital-based case management system is described to demonstrate a successful system. Issues of the uniqueness of human services applications, the use of microcomputer technology, and prototyping as an alternative to the SDLC are analyzed in relation to the case study.  相似文献

The present paper describes the process by which a multiple-level collaborative database system was designed. By clearly elaborating the various design goals it was possible to build a system through which ongoing program evaluation efforts can be easily managed without disrupting the service delivery process. A combination of economic, demographic, and political factors is pressuring health care providers into improving discharge planning and long-term care services for their clients, particularly the elderly and poor. Case management, with its emphasis on patient assessment, monitoring, and program evaluation, is one tool increasingly adopted to accomplish these goals. This paper examines the application of computer technology to case management and describes a computerized, hospital-based case management program for the elderly.  相似文献

Findings from an exploratory case study describe microcomputer applications developed during the first year after introduction in a local office of a state social services department. The ten applications produced by a single person working less than quarter time had impacts on the structure and operations of the organization. In regard to performance of its information handling, the microcomputer improved the efficiency, but not the quality of the system. This suggests that user developed microcomputer applications are not the best method of approaching information systems development. For those who must proceed in this manner because of limited resources, however, there are some impressive, but limited, gains.  相似文献

This paper presents the findings of a literature review conducted from December 1983 to January 1984, exploring the microcomputer uses and needs of individual practitioners in psychology and psychiatry. The review covers an overview and history of information technology requirements of the practitioner community and discusses hardware and software systems, as well as issues and barriers associated with utilization. The literature indicates that mental health practitioners are just beginning to awaken to the benefits of microcomputers to assist in their private practices, but generally do not recognize the degree to which they rely on information as a resource for conducting their clinical and administrative tasks.  相似文献
