An increase in kurtosis is achieved through the location- and scale-free movement of probability mass from the “shoulders” of a distribution into its centre and tails. We introduce a coherent structure of ordering and measures, requiring no symmetry assumption, that represent different formalizations of this movement. For this purpose spread functions and spread-spread plots are defined. The orderings impose growth patterns on the spread-spread plot of the distributions involved, and the weakest involve both a specific scale-matching technique and placement of “shoulders”. The role of existing kurtosis orderings and measures in this general context is identified and examples discussed throughout. 相似文献

For testing the equality of means (location parameters) of two populations, Tiku (1980a) defined a statistic Tc (based on symmetrically censored samples) and showed that this statistic is robust to underlying populations and is also remarkably powerful. In this paper, we define a similar statistic T (based on samples s with observations censored only on one side) and show that this stat is tic is more powerful than T and nonparametric statistics, C for skew populations. We also provide a modification of this statistic for testing the equality of two population variances. 相似文献

This study considers the staffing problem of a vendor call center in a co‐sourcing setting. The aim is to take short‐term variability and correlations in time for call arrivals at such a vendor call center into account. To do so, peakedness is proposed as a useful measure of the burstiness in the arrival stream. The study empirically demonstrates the presence of bursty arrivals at a call center and proposes an approach to the measurement of the peakedness of the arrival stream making use of standard call center data. The problematic nature of bursty arrivals in the context of call center co‐sourcing is demonstrated along with an asymptotic result establishing that the problem persists in large call centers. The study then analyzes two peakedness‐based staffing methods: one which is a well known extension of the square root staffing rule and another which makes use of the Hayward approximation principles. Both approaches are simple and enable the vendor to improve its staffing procedure with good accuracy. 相似文献

A New Measure of Kurtosis Adjusted for Skewness 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
David C. Blest 《Australian & New Zealand Journal of Statistics》2003,45(2):175-179
Studies of kurtosis often concentrate on only symmetric distributions. This paper identifies a process through which the standardized measure of kurtosis based on the fourth moment about the mean can be written in terms of two parts: (i) an irreducible component, about L4, which can be seen to occur naturally in the analysis of fourth moments; (ii) terms that depend only on moments of lower order, in particular including the effects of asymmetry attached to the third moment about the mean. This separation of the effect of skewness allows definition of an improved measure of kurtosis. This paper calculates and discusses examples of the new measure of kurtosis for a range of standard distributions. 相似文献
