The Conversation of Scholarship

Abstract

At its core, scholarship is a long, threaded, multiparticipant conversation. Scholars, students, librarians, and publishers all are engaged. There are side conversations addressing specific fields and larger conversations asking probing questions about the nature of scholarship as a whole. Librarians’ contributions to the broader conversation have not always accounted for our side conversations, among ourselves or with other participants. Our choices in acquisitions, our choices in services, even our choices in library job titles and responsibilities signal and shape the scholarly conversation in ways that are often opaque. It is imperative that we openly acknowledge the influence and impact of our side conversations to ensure our full participation in the conversation of scholarship.     

2008 North American Serials Interest Group Conference: Taking the Sting out of Serials!

Abstract

The twelfth annual MOBIUS Conference was held June 7–9, 2011, at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia, Missouri. The MOBIUS consortium of Missouri is currently composed of fifty-nine academic libraries, two public libraries, and the Missouri State Library. The conference offered various opportunities, including a keynote address by Meredith Farkas and a networking dessert session on the first night. The second day featured six concurrent sessions, each having six different presentations, along with delicious food, generous door prizes, and the chance to meet with vendors. The third day consisted of four different four-hour post-conference training sessions. Presentations are available for download from the conference Web site.¹     

民国宁波籍编辑家群体的文化贡献与文化精神

宁波港开埠较早,伴随着“西风东渐”,宁波地域文化基因使得宁波籍文化人在民国这个特定历史时期,兴办报刊、经营书业,传播新思想、新文化,涌现出一批编辑家:出版奇才张静庐、技术改良之父鲍咸昌、乡贤文献刊刻者张寿镛、诗人出版家邵洵美、为民众喉舌报人金臻庠,等。他们敢为天下先的文化创新精神、见利思义的文化自觉与责任担当以及救亡图存的爱国情怀,给当代出版人以启迪。     

法典、幕友与书商————论清代江南法律书籍的出版与流通

清代江南地区出版业繁盛,其最具特色的是大量法律书籍的出版与流通。苏州、杭州等地是法律书籍出版业的中心,出版坊刻本律例全书的版本就在百种以上。商业出版的法律书籍内容更新及时,不但包括清廷颁布的律例,还囊括了诸家注释、则例和成案。江南的地方官员、幕友与书商广泛地参与法律书籍的编辑和出版。商业出版的法律典籍在清代逐步取代了官刻本,成为官员和幕友在法律审判中的主要参考书,因而对清代法律实践产生了一定影响,并且促进了法律信息的流通。     

从民间出版到独立出版——以近年民间诗歌传播为例

面对风起云涌的诗歌民刊,我们应该思考"民间出版"与"独立出版"现象,因为这或许更具有实质性意义,这也是为民刊寻找合法性的最后依据。杨克版《中国新诗年鉴》和民间出版人潘洗尘等个案透视出民间出版在传统的体制化出版与现代独立出版之间的文化境遇,同时也预示了真正意义的独立出版已经绽放萌芽。而汉语诗歌资料馆、不是出版基金(The Atypical)、黑哨诗歌出版计划、坏蛋出版计划等层出不穷的民间印行机构,则已经形成了崛起的"独立出版"现象。     

论中国90年代长篇小说创作的市场化倾向

进入90年代以来,中国的长篇小说创作出现了引入注目的市场化倾向,这是受商业化语境、文学生产机制的变革以及文学创作的多元化的影响而出现的。长篇小说创作中的市场化倾向主要是通过作家和出版商表现出来的。作家为了迎合市场的需要,改变自己的创作风格或涉足受市场欢迎的题材;出版商通过自己的市场化操作来影响创作,使创作面向市场,同时出版商对作品的包装也起到了对作品迎向市场的进一步“创作”的作用。对90年代中国长篇小说创作中这种市场化倾向,我们要从其特质、出版商的作用以及读者的作用三个方面来认识。     

Using the Diffusion of Innovation Concept to Explain the Factors That Contribute to the Adoption Rate of E-journal Publishing

This paper reports on the factors that contribute to the adoption rate of e-journal publishing based upon responses from 82 Malaysian journal publishers. Drawing upon the theory of innovation diffusion, the study examines the role of awareness, three organization variables (publication size, age of the journal, and experience of editors), and attributes of e-journals (relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability and observability) as influences to the rate of e-journal publishing adoption. Findings show that only two attributes—complexity and trialability—emerge as significant contributors to e-journal adoption rates, and all three organization variables—journal's age, publication size, and editorial experience—are significant. Collectively, these five significant variables explained 57.8% of the variance in adoption rate. We discuss the results and implication of the findings with respect to the wider context of e-journal publishing.     

The Triumvirate: Effective Communication Across Publisher,Library, and Discovery Channels

Abstract

In examining data transfer challenges from both librarian and publisher perspectives, this article based on a NC Serials Conference presentation calls for proactive industry communication across publisher, library, and discovery service channels. The authors discuss the importance of collaborative communication across the industry.     

文学塑型中的消费话语：话语形态与个案分析

福柯和新历史主义批评唤起了人们对权力话语的觉醒。事实上,在文学与读者之间也存在类似的话语结构与话语流通。文章用系统、动态的方法从理论上探讨了消费话语的形态及其影响文学作品的方式,并通过两个形态迥异的个案加以解析验证。
