Gender workshops with men: experiences and reflections
Authors:Bhasin K
Abstract:The author first heard demands for workshops on women's issues for men in 1990. In response to the increasing awareness of women's issues, several donors began suggesting gender sensitization workshops for men. The author and her colleagues have since conducted workshops with men, mostly senior men in decision-making positions in nongovernmental organizations, over the past few years. She discusses her experience from the first six workshops: two in India, two in Bangladesh, and two in Nepal. The author and her colleagues felt comfortable handling the workshops. As development activists, they had enough work experience at different levels. As trainers, they were well equipped and confident. As feminists, they were less angry, less emotionally charged, and less confrontational. Overall, the women felt capable of conducting a useful and sustained dialogue with men on sensitive issues.
