湖南时务学堂内外冲突平议

湖南时务学堂在不太长的时间里培养了一批具有新思想的知识人,为稍后开展的维新运动以及后来的一系列政治运动输送了人才。首批40名学生在此后10余年大半死于国事,为中国社会进步立下了不朽功勋。这是湖南时务学堂值得夸耀的成就。然而遗憾的是,湖南时务学堂并没有坚持办下去,随着梁启超等新势力的介入,学堂内部矛盾逐渐显现,与外部的冲突,特别是与湖南省内各种力量的冲突也日趋严重。过去的研究将这些冲突一概归并为新旧势力的冲突,以为湖南旧势力无法容忍梁启超等人的新思想。其实,平心静气重新检讨各派势力的言论与主张,我们不难发现时务学堂内外冲突可能并不像过去所描述那样,新者皆新,旧者全旧,而是别有原因在。
