The Identification of the Female Character between a "Chaste" Maid and a "complete" Woman——On the Characterization of "Tess of the D'urbervilles" and Its Aesthetic Features

In the study of the famous novel by Thomas Hardy ＂Tess of the D＇urbervilles＂,this paper takes up the clues provided by Thomas Hardy in Preface to the Fifth （English） Edition,to probe into the implicit multiple meanings carried by the word＂pure＇in the subtitle ＂a pure woman＂. In its discussion of the two senses of that make up the phrase-its meanings both in nature and in aesthetics, the paper focuses on seeking the interrelated relation between imagebuilding and characterization ,making attempts to construct the pattern governing the devising of the scheme and the overall narrative strategies.
