Getting involved: Communication for participatory development

Over the past few decades the planned and deliberate use ofcommunication has taken an increasingly prominent place in developmentstrategies. It was realized that no change in the lives of peoplecovered by development programmes will take place without thedevelopment of appropriate values, attitudes and stock of knowledgein the minds of the people. This notion put due emphasis oneducation and communication as important instruments for development.Depending on the scope, approach and target audience of theprogramme, communication activities have taken the form of informationtransfers by mass media, instructors, extensionists, workshops,demonstrations, theatre performances, film shows and many others.
