| 摘 要： | ２０００年２月底，德国艺术家帕尔德海姆的作品《世纪之轴》展示于江苏镇江。本文在赏析这次艺术活动的同时，对现代艺术的发展和演变作了简略的回顾。作者认为，对于现代社会而言，艺术已不是简单的反映和表现生活的手段。它既非模仿本能的体现，亦非单纯的情感交流，而是更多地表现出人对生存的世界和生命意义的一种追问。同时，现代艺术形式的丰富性也为当下艺术的创造提供了多样的可能。
