刘禹锡与巴山楚水

Liu Yuxi and His Poems About the Scenery in Sichuan and Hubei Provinces

Most of Liu Yuxi's excellent poems were written during the period of his relegation in Sichuan and Hubei Provinces. Among these poems, some describe the natural beauty and the cultural activities. In his poems, natural scenery is picturesquely represented and the poet's feelings of longing for his hometown are implied. Some local customs are shown in his poems with a distinctive flavor. They are brimming over with life and truthfully reflecting the local customs in labor production, folk worshipping and sacrifice-offering, and in singing and dancing. All this shows that the poet, with a strong conviction and an open mind, was always concerned with the imperial court and the weal and woe of the common people. And it also shows that Liu's success in poetry was closely related with the influence of Southern and the traditional literature.
