Nominalism, Realism and Linguistic Arbitrariness --On the Relationship Between Language and Thinking

The present study concerns itself with a linguistic study of philosophic issues such as nominalism,realism,and arbitrariness in symbolic presentation. To better illustrate the relationship between language and thinking,a historical and comparative approach has been adopted. It is believed that a study like this will shed some light on a cognitive study of the relationship among language,philosophy,and mind. There are six parts in this paper. Following a short introduction to the topic,the paper starts with a philosophic discussion of nominalism vs.realism issues in ancient Greek and Roman traditions. The third part exclusively illustrates the understanding of these heated issues by ancient Chinese philosophers. Some instantiating discussions are given in the next two parts,with idioms in Chinese and appellative names in English being examined respectively. The author ends the paper by further illustrating the significance of an interdisciplinary study of linguistic issues in the new epoch.
