Skillful Design and Ingenious Couplets: On Fan Zhongyan's Fu

As the turning point of the development of fu,a form of literary style with couplets of identical number of characters neatly,in the Northern Song Dynasty,a large number of Fan Zhongyan's fu widened the topic and content of the previous creation.His works embodied his reflections on saving the world and the way of governing the nation and,in addition,comments on the world and life,so fu is not a singer's tool but a thinker's carrier.Fan demonstrated his precise literary skills and frequent innovations through such techniques as theme statement,rhyming,polishing sentences and natural allusion.Furthermore,Fan summarized the laws of creating fu,an important contribution to the study of fu.
