湖湘文化对外宣传必离不开湖湘风景名胜和其他具有浓郁区域特点的文化遗产。它们引人赞叹,却不具有为其他区域、民族认同和效仿的影响力。从湖湘文化中发掘、整理出那些具有优秀地域和民族特点,并能将之提升到具有普世精神价值的文化遗产是一种文化自觉。湖湘学术研究多从文字典籍中探究湖湘文化。在关注典籍、精英人物体现出的官方文化系统的同时,关注与官方文化系统相对应的草根意识形态是一种文化自觉。当代湖湘民众多为湖湘＂吃文化＂、＂洗脚文化＂、＂歌厅文化＂等津津乐道。以普世共通的精神价值为出发点,探求并营造一种把精神追求放在首位的社会文化环境,是全体具有＂文化自觉＂的湖湘士子的神圣使命。
