殊途同归 相得益彰——《文言英译教程》中四大名著翻译策略探微

郭著章教授等编写的《文言英译教程》中专门有一章介绍＂古典小说英译＂情况,内容涉及我国四大名著英译片段及教材编者相关点评。在仔细研读原文与译文的基础上,进行汉英对比,同时对四种英译文作了平行比较分析。结果发现,尽管译文片段分别出自四位不同译者,而且翻译的年代也不尽相同,但他们所运用的翻译策略却基本相同,且与当代翻译理论不谋而合,称得上＂殊途同归,相得益彰＂。

AN EXAMINATION OF THE TRANSLATION STRATEGIES WITH EXAMPLES FROM A COURSE IN TRANSLATION FROM CLASSICAL CHINESE INTO ENGLISH

There is a chapter dealing with ＂English translations of Chinese classical novels＂ in A Course in Translation from Classical Chinese into English compiled by Prof.Guo Zhuzhang and others.In this chapter there are sections of English versions of the Chinese four classical works.On the basis of perusal of the source and target texts,comparisons are made between the two and among the English versions.It is found that although the translations were done by four different translators and in different periods of time,the strategies adopted were essentially the same and were in line with contemporary translational theories.It is like the case of ＂the same goal but different routes＂ and ＂setting off each other＇s merits＂.
