Tillich's starting point of his theoretical in cultural theology is the nature of religion. As a dimension in man's spiritual life, religion is not a special function of man's spiritual life, but the deeper layer in all of its functions. In the largest and most basic sense of the word, religion is the ultimate concern. The relationship between religion and culture is the very center of Tillich's concerns. He tries hard to lay bear the many special elements of man's cultural activity by relating Christianity to secular culture. Religion is the essence of culture, whereas culture is the form of religion. The relationship between religion and culture is the basic concern of Tillich's cultural theology.
