中国传统海疆观念是中国社会的经济、政治、文化、军事等的反映,具有弛张更替、强干弱枝、守土防御等特质."天地君亲师","安内攘外"、"重陆轻海","和柔四夷"、"以夷制夷"等传统疆国观念是其产生与发展的渊源.这些传统海疆观念缺乏对海疆观念整体性的把握,延缓与桎梏了中国海洋社会经济的整体成长,加大了民族间的隔阂,不利于民族间平等交往.

Predicament of Costal Areas and Territorial Seas: a Reflection on Chinese Traditional Concept of Costal Areas and Territorial Seas

The traditional Chinese concept of costal areas and territorial seas was the reflection of economy, politics, culture, and military affairs of Chinese society. It was characterized by the alternation of tension and relaxation, strengthening the stem and weakening the branches and defending the territory against the enemies. It originated from the traditional territorial concepts of heaven, earth, monarch, parents and teacher, resisting foreign aggression in fitting, valuing land more than sea, appeasing neighboring nations to get peaceful coexistence and making use of foreign countries' contradictions. As it failed to realize the concept of costal areas and territorial seas as a whole, the traditional concept delayed, hindered the development of Chinese oceanic social economy and expanded the barriers between nations so as to be harmful to equal contacts between nations.
