Abstract: | Last week, longtime methadone researcher and treatment professional Herman Joseph, Ph.D., died after a period of declining health. A stalwart patient advocate, he was ahead of his time, always focused on eliminating stigma early in his career, and on increasing access to treatment in the criminal justice system. He was vital to the development of the Rikers Island jail‐based program, KEEP, which provided methadone maintenance. We interviewed him in person and on the phone several times over the years, and were always impressed by his compassion and wisdom. The methadone field lost another great leader last year: Bob Newman, M.D. (see ADAW, Aug. 6, 2018, https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/adaw.32060 ). |
