"Prelude" is one of great works by New Zealand short story writer Katherine Mansfield.It begins on the Burnells' moving day and mainly tells the characters' psychological world.Psychological experience by Stanley Burnell's wife Linda and her unmarried sister Beryl is the reflection of the bondage in the traditional patriarchal culture.The portrayal true to the two women's soul is reflected through the odd ways: Fantasy by Linda shows her attempt to escape from responsibility both as a wife and mother.Beryl's distress and despair are reflected by means of mirror when she communicates with the other "self" in the mirror because she should find a husband and have her own home.Their inner world shows their strong resentment against the male-dominated society,though their rebel is speechless and negative.
