多语言多文化背景下官方语言的推广和弱势族群母语的传承和维护是一对矛盾。马来西亚的经验表明官方语言推广中语言地位规划优先于本体规划,地位规划的实现是一个缓慢的过程。处于弱势的族群的拼争可以延缓其母语走向衰落,但其生命力取决于多个方面。华语在马来西亚的前景不容乐观,它给学界提出了许多值得进一步思考的课题。

Official Language Promotion vs. Chinese Prospect: A Case Study of Malaysia

The promotion of official language and the preservation of mother tongues in the society with multi-lingual background are contradictory. The experience in Malaysia shows that priority should be given to language position planning rather than the linguistic planning. The realization of position planning is a long process. The efforts paid by the minorities to preserve their mother tongues do work to some degree, but the final destiny of the language is also decided by many other factors. It cannot be optimistic toward the prospect of Chinese as a minority mother language in Malaysia, and this case provides many subjects worth further discussing.
