《西厢记》英译钩沉

王实甫的《西厢记》是众多元杂剧中最优秀也是影响最广的作品,其前身是元稹的《莺莺传》和董解元的《西厢记诸宫调》,迄今为止这三部作品均被翻译成多国文字,在世界文坛产生了很大的影响。学界对于《西厢记》的英译本研究多有疏漏,因此对《西厢记》24个英译本进行研究,补正前人的遗漏,可以丰富我国《西厢记》翻译研究的史料。同时,在《西厢记》长达一百多年的翻译过程中呈现出以下特征:早期以《莺莺传》翻译为主,中期主要是《西厢记》节译、选译和编译,后期以西方译者为主导中方译者为辅的《西厢记》全译本为特色。《西厢记》成功的翻译经验可为我国传统戏曲外译提供借鉴。

A Brief Account and Analysis of English Versions of Xi Xiang Ji

Wang Shifu's Xi Xiang Ji (The Romance of the Western Chamber), generally regarded as the best and most influential work of Yuan Drama, is based on Yuan Zhen's The Story o f Yingying and Master Tung's Western Chamber Romance. So far, the three literary works have been translated into various languages, exerting a great influence upon world literature, This paper gives a brief account and analysis of 24 English versions of Xi Xiang Ji and the characteristics of its translation process: the translation of The Story of Ts'ui Yingying pioneers, followed by abridged translation, adaptation and full translation of Xi Xiang Ji,the translation of which is dominated by western scholars and complemented by Chinese translators, with a view to enriching its translation research and providing reference and guidance for future translation of Chinese dramatic works.
