Professor Zhao Jing-shen's Outstanding Contribution to the Studies in Traditional Chinese Opera

Professor Zhao Jing shen is an acknowledged authority on studies in ancient traditional Chinese opera. In memeory of this deceased great master, this paper enumerates his fruitful achievements in the study of ancient traditional Chinese opera and states the reasons for all this. First, Professor Zhao was keenly aware of the status and significance of traditional Chinese opera in the development of Chinese art and literature and did his best to correct the former practice to highly value poetry and belittle opera. Second, for 50 years, he persistently devoted great energy and enthusiasm to the study of opera. Third, He employed scientific approaches in his studies, abandoning the traditional way to approach an opera only in terms of literature and laying emphasis on grasping its artistic features and making an appropriate evaluation in the light of practical effect. From all this, it is not difficult to get a glimpse of Professor Zhao's academic status and style as well the noble moral character of this scholar.
