<金瓶梅>问世后,先有沈德符等对它大加抨击,说它明惩暗劝,实为淫书;淫书说寿终正寝,认为<金瓶梅>是一部劝世、戒世之作的观点却颇为流行.其实<金瓶梅>是一部哀书或痛史,它展现的是那极端黑暗、腐朽时代的人物的扭曲史,正如何满子所说,书中人物的离奇言行更多应看作是人物找不到正常出路的变态的发泄,使人们品味出更多更深刻的悲剧内涵.

On the Unique Connotation of Jin Ping Mei: A Mourning History

Upon its appearance, Jin Pin Mei was ruthlessly attacked by Shen Defu and many other critics, who accused the book of being pornographic though it claimed to denounce evils and eulogize merits. Today, it is held a dominant view that Jin Ping Mei is a persuasive and admonishing book. However, the writer of this article believes that Jin Ping Mei should be reevaluated as a book of mourning history, for the fact that it purposely depicts the distorted life of those licentious people living in that extremely dark and decadent era. As He Manzi put it, the eccentric behaviour of the characters should be viewed in its own right as an abnormal satisfaction of various human needs, which were not and could not be met in that society. This understanding might provide a good insight into the tragic connotation of the book.
