Language construes human experience through meaning which in turn is realized by the transitivity system at the lexical-grammatical level.Language users can choose different ways to represent the world,and their actual choices depend to a large degree on their personal experiences and social-cultural contexts.The choices of different transitivity processes as a whole contribute to the construction of themes and characterization.By employing Halliday’s transitivity framework,this article explores the relationship between linguistic structures and socially constructed meaning in a narrative text so as to reveal the underlying themes: the differentiated social roles of men and women,the retorted relationship between men and nature.
