Linguistics Factors in Schema Theory

Gombrich＇s theories had been influential in a moment, but after the linguistic turn happened in the Western Hu- manities, his theories was under stricture that the New art history scholars of new generation questioned his psychology posi- tion. They called him naturalism and regarded him as conservative. This paper argues that Gombrich＇s theories in fact have linguistics factors, though these factors have long been ignored. Specifically, through his schema theory, the concept of painting schema is similar to language vocabulary; schema conveys the visible world through the code and it distinguishes and picks the world by the way of articulation. These concepts show strong traces of linguistics and semiotics in schema the- ory, which should be taken seriously.
