A Historical Survey of Campus Culture at Beida and Tsinghua Universities

Founded more than 100and90 years ago, Beijing University and Tsinghua University have been the most prestigious universities in China. A historical survey of the two universities reveals that their success in higher education largely rests with their excellent campus culture gradually taking shape in their development. It is found that their campus culture embodies explicit educational objectives and democratic management, patriotic academic spirits, various extracurricular activities and special architectural styles. The two universities, though different in terms of disciplines, share many similarities in campus culture. Meanwhile, each of them represents a unique characteristic. A survey of the campus culture of the prominent universities is conducive to answering President Jiang Zemin's call that China should build up several universities with worldwide reputation.
