| Abstract: | During the Han Dynasty, the government, on the one hand, implemented a policy to exploit the peasants, and, however, laid down various policies to protect them in order to the economic basis of the then feudal state on the other. These policies include limiting the land owned by the governmental officials and the landlords, renting or transferring the state-owned land to the peasants, reducing or exempting taxes and corvee, constructing irrigation works, popularizing ox-driven tillage skills, reliving the peasants in disasters, etc. Therefore they have exerted great influence on the successive governments of the Han Dynasties and the late feudal dynasties in China. |
