Merchants and Urban Community Identity in Early Qing Tianjin

Benefited from the long distance trades and salt business,Tianjin attained significant development in the early Qing and attracted a great number of immigrants from other areas.Different from their Ming predecessors,who came to Tianjin mostly for official or military services,new immigrants in the Qing dynasty were largely driven by business purposes.Economic interests and city life bound those urban dwellers together as a new community,with elite activism represented by merchants' participation in various kinds of social welfare and public entertainment as its soul.
