Analysis of the Origin Academic Senate in and Development of the Western Universities

The Academic Senate in Western university is a governing body made up of professors from various faculties within the university. It emerged as early as the origin of university and played a very important role in the history of a thousand years of university development. In the early period, it managed the university autonomy as a union;during the long period of development,it created the ＂Professors＂ Management Model to defend firmly the authority of academic freedom; nowadays its function is further specialized but still indispensable and vital in the ＂co-governance structure＂. As the oldest faculty in the university, the Academic Senate has always served as the defender of the academic freedom, professor managing and self-determination in the university.
