The Childhood Traumatic Narration in W or the Memory of Childhood

Georges Perec, a world-renowned French writer, constructed and caught his childhood traumatic experiences and feelings suffered from his Jewish identity in the memoir W or the Memory of Childhood. Its poetic expression and intricate construction put this book in the shelves of classical works of trauma literature. This paper, based on trauma theories put forward by theorists, Cathy Caruth, aims to trace the detailed reasons of the difficulties for Perec to recall his childhood experience. It is mainly due to his childhood traumatic memories’ undefined and traumatic characteristics. Facing this difficulty, Perec constructed two different but interwoven texts, one autobiography and the other fiction, both of which recorded his uncertain and fragmented childhood memories and described in depth those inhuman things occurred in Concentration Camp. Through this method, his traumatic experiences and feelings are fully displayed.
