论苏州早期近代工业的先天不足——以上海工业近代化为比较

鸦片战争后,中外经济社会之间存在的巨大差距逐渐为部分开明官僚和知识分子认知,发展近代工业,以对外御侮、对内震慑,走入了历史进程。作为新兴口岸城市代表的上海和作为江南传统都会城市代表的苏州,先后迈出了近代机器工业的艰难步伐,但是发展的结果却有天渊之别。本文以近代上海早期工业化的发展为比照,检视苏州早期近代工业发展的曲折道路。

On the National Weakness of Early Modern Industry in Suzhou——Comparison of Shanghai Industry Modernization

After the First Opium War, the huge economic and social gaps between China and the Western world were gradually recognized by some open-minded feudal bureaucrats and intellectuals. In order to strengthen national powers to maintain international independence and ensure domestic control, they started modern industry from then on. Shanghai, a typical new port city, and Suzhou, a typical traditional metropolis to the south of the Yangtze River have both begun to develop their modern machine building-industries at almost the same time, but the results turned out vastly different. This article makes comparisons of the industrial development of the two cities and tries to interpret the differ-ent results.
