The Iran Issue in WWII

Iran adjoins the Soviet Union on the north and holds the strategic point of the Persian Gulf in the south. Its location is very important. In the early days of WWII, Iran pursued the policy of neutrality, doing its best to keep out of the war in order not to provoke any great power. But somehow, it fell into serious discord with the Allies over the issue of the presence of many Germans in Iran, which caused the Allies to send troops there. Finally Iran had to abandon neutrality and joined the Allies in a unique way in the Anti Fascist war. Since the Soviet Union made great efforts to build up its sphere of influence in northern Iran, the relations between the two countries strained. During the initial postwar period the issue of the Soviet Union withdrawing the troops from Iran made the relations between America and the Soviet Union steadily deteriorate, which became another important incident that touched off the Cold War.
