Cultural exchanges between the Hus(non-Han ethnic groups who lived in the north and west of ancient China) and the Hans have been a long historical process.At the initial and middle stages of the process,the low-status Hus were often despised by the Han people.As a result,the "fox" was often adopted as a derogatory name for the Hus.Stories about the fox spirit often recounted the bitter experiences of the Hus,especially the Hu women.The author argues that writings like Renshizhuan can prove to be valuable historical documents on interethnic cultural communication if they are studied with extreme caution.
