A neglected struggler: comments on Mathilde in The Red And The Black

Mathilde has been neglected and only understood superficially.Actually,not only is she a lover,but also a struggler as well as Julien in this novel.If we accept that Julien is a representative of the young civi-lians who are not satisfied with Bourbon Restoration,struggling for their own fate,Mathilde then represents the noble promising young who are not to collapse together with Ancient Age Bourbon at the end of Bourbon Restoration and on the eve of July Revolution.She fights against with her fate in her own way and tries to ac-complish value of her life.Social connotation can be seen in her tragedy.So,it is not a complete understanding to The Red And The Black if we neglect struggle of Mathilde.
