Russia's Far East Region in Chekhov's Eyes

In 1890, A. P. Chekhov, who wanted to free himself from his mental and writing crises, went to Russia's Far East region, especially to Sakhalin and Vladivostok, and witnessed the life and fate of the exiles. In Chekhov's eyes, the Far East region was like hell on the earth, where the migrants lived in poverty and indulged in excessive drinking and promiscuous life and the exiles were enslaved by the prison authorities. His writing "Sakhalin", a Russia in miniature, exposed the miserable life under the rule of the cruel czar.
