试论美国唯英语运动的实质

在20世纪末的20年间,美国政坛围绕英语官方化以及唯英语运动和双语教育的论争搞得沸沸扬扬,一般认为该运动的实质是美利坚民族主义的张扬和宣泄。美国白人统治阶级巧妙利用西方启蒙主义和种族主义,将其作为转移视线、瓦解阶级斗争意志的工具,从而揭示了该运动的深厚思想渊源和群众基础。美国不需要为英语立法。

On the nature of English-Only Movement in USA

During the last twenty years of the twentieth century there erupted a fierce debate about the officialization of English,the English-only movement and bilingual education in American politics.Scholars generally regard this movement as nothing more than American nationalism gone awry.Based on an extensive reading of both Chinese and English publications,this paper finds that the white ruling class craftily avail themselves of Western enlightenment and racism as a divertionary tactic to subvert class struggles,thereby uncovering the movement's deep-lying ideological source and mass appeal.It further claims,through a brief comparison with other Western countries,that the United States does not need any legislation about the English language.
