A Tentative Probeinto the Features of English Idioms

Idioms are fixed expressions formed during the process of language use over ages. They are a special language form of strong expressiveness. English idioms are often, but not always, non-literal and are hardly marginal in the English language, although they have been relatively neglected in lexical studies of the language. This neglect is especially obvious in the respect of their features. This paper, in view of those features and being an attempt thus to probe into this form, first introduces two basic classifications of English idioms, and then deals with the features from different perspectives of formation, semantic meaning, and their relationship with culture and society. English idioms discussed in this paper are in broad sense with included set phrases, slang, proverbs, allusions, and habitual collocations, and etc..
