| Abstract: | The use of language as one of the media of communication naturally expresses and reveals the true ego of the user, whereas at the same time it is also a perfect means to conceal and masquerade the user's authentic feelings. Passive structures are one typical example of this exploitation. English news items are cited to explore the pragmatic functions of the passive voice: foregrounding and backgrounding, hinting, evasion and ambiguity. |
