Duality Deconstructing and Pluralistic Coexistence: the Empire's Self-disintegration in Waiting for the Barbarians

Adopting a postmodern approach, this paper clarifies the binary oppositions between the civilized and the barbarian, self and the other, the right of discourse and aphasia in Waiting for the Barbarians, an allegorical masterpiece of J. M. Coetzee. It analyzes the life of the marginalized people and deconstructs these binary oppositions, affirming difference, contradiction and the harmonious coexistence of plurality.
