Preface to Annotation on A Collection of Yuan Zhen''''s Poems

Yuan zhen blazed a new trail in his literary theory and creations. He initiated the New Yuefu Movement of folk songs and ballads. His literal achievements in poetry were diversified. His poems to mourn for the dead were sincere and moving, and his love poems in a flowery style described the sentimental scenes of the joys and sorrows, separations and reunions of lovers. From a historicla perspective, his poems helped to broaden the vision of love poems. Annotation on A Collection of Yuan Zhen's Poems is a first book of its kind and it reaches a high plane of scholastic attainment. Its publication will no doubt help forward our study of Yuan Zhen and his works.
